2022 Raul Perez "Ultreia Saint Jacques", Bierzo, Spain
ABOUT THIS WINE
This wine is primarily made with MencĂa, co-fermented with small percentages of Garnacha Tintorera, Bastardo (Trousseau), and Alicante Bouschet. The fruit is sourced from multiple vineyard parcels in and around Valtuille de Abajo, with vines planted between 1910 and 1940. These vineyards are primarily cooler-climate parcels, which preserves acidity.Â
100% whole-cluster fermentation utilizing spontaneous, wild yeast. The wine undergoes extended maceration (often lasting between 2 to 5 months) to slowly extract color, aromatics, and fine tannins without extracting bitter compounds. Maturation occurs in a combination of used French oak barrels, large foudres, and cement tanks for 14 months prior to bottling.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
RaĂșl PĂ©rez Pereira is universally considered to be one of the worldâs most visionary winemakers. Since he produced his first vintage for his familyâs winery in 1994 at the age 22, he has been in the forefront of the conversation about what has been called âThe New Spainâ. In 2005, he left his family business to strike out on his own, creating Bodegas y Viñedos RaĂșl PĂ©rez, which quickly became the point of reference for the Bierzo appellation. In the intervening years, he has expanded his sphere of activity to include the appellations of RĂas Baixas, Ribeira Sacra and Tierra de LeĂłn, but his heart and his home remain in Valtuille de Abajo, the village in Bierzo where his family has been tending vines for well over 300 years.
In addition to numerous other accolades, RaĂșl was named âWinemaker of the Yearâ by German publication Der Feinschmecker in 2014 and âBest Winemaker in the Worldâ for 2015 by the French publication Bettane+Desseauve. In the February 2018 Decanter, Master of Wine Pedro Ballesteros wrote, âRaĂșl PĂ©rez is the archetype of the intuitive winemaking genius.â A picture of RaĂșl in that same article is captioned, âIs this the best winemaker in the world?â RaĂșl would certainly not self-apply any of these superlatives. In fact, his genius is far exceeded by his humility and generosity of spirit. That humility comes through in his wines. These are not âwinemakerâ wines so much as they are unadulterated expressions of the villages and vineyards from which they hail.
