2023 Weingut Prager Riesling Smaragd "Achleiten", Wachau, Austria
ABOUT THIS WINE
Smaragd is a designation of ripeness for dry wines used exclusively by members of the Vinea Wachau. The wines must have a minimum alcohol of 12.5%. The grapes are hand-harvested, typically in October and November, and are sent directly to press where they spontaneously ferment in stainless-steel tanks. Achleiten sits east of WeiĂenkirchen and is one of the most famous vineyards in the Wachau. The steeply-terraced vineyard existed in Roman times. Some sections have just 40 cm of topsoil over the bedrock of Gföler Gneiss, amphibolitic stone, and slate. âDestroyed soil,â as Toni Bodenstein likes to say.
Weingut Prager avoids oak aging entirely, focusing instead on pure fruit character and soil expression. Because of the older vines with thick skins, the wine relies on subtle power and structure rather than blunt fruitiness
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Weingut Prager is regarded as one of Austriaâs most iconic and respected estates, celebrated for producing precise, age-worthy expressions of GrĂŒner Veltliner and Riesling from the Wachauâs historic vineyards. Led by the Prager family, the estate is known for its meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and commitment to expressing the individuality of each site.
The winery farms many of the Wachauâs steep terraced vineyards, where ancient stone walls, rocky soils, and dramatic elevation changes contribute depth, structure, and minerality to the wines. In the cellar, Prager follows a restrained, traditional approach focused on clarity, balance, and minimal intervention.
Their wines are internationally admired for their purity, finesse, and ability to translate the Wachauâs unique terroir into elegant, highly expressive wines that evolve beautifully with time.
