ABOUT THIS WINE

From the winemaker: "First produced in 1966, this is our longest continuous zinfandel production. The grapes are grown in three adjoining vineyards on a single soil type, deposited by an ancient washout of the Russian River that carried river stone and gravel. It is approximately one-and-a- quarter miles long and a half-mile wide."

The 2023 is a classic field blend (70% Zinfandel, 18% Carignane, 9% Petite Sirah, 3% Alicante Bouschet). Following a cool growing season, a late hand-harvest occurred from October 7–24. Vinification involved pre-industrial, non-interventionist techniques, naturally fermenting the juice and aging it for 16 months in 100% air-dried American oak (15% new).
The grapes come from three adjoining blocks in Alexander Valley, resting on ancient Russian River gravel and clay-limestone soils. Grapes are hand-harvested with an average Brix of 24.8°. Due to unusually cool weather, it was the latest Geyserville harvest on record (some picked as late as November 1). Fermented via native yeast fermentation followed by aging entirely in air-dried American oak. The resulting wine is a robust, dark-hued release offering inky black fruit, spice, and minerality, recognized as a highly ageable, complex vintage.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Ridge Vineyards is one of America's most celebrated wineries, famous for its pre-industrial approach to winemaking, certified organic viticulture, and legendary single-vineyard wines. Operating out of Northern California, they are globally renowned for their historic Monte Bello estate and benchmark Zinfandels and Cabernet Sauvignons.
Ridge was founded in the early 1960s by four Stanford Research Institute scientists who purchased land and re-bonded an old 19th-century winery on Monte Bello Ridge. The winery shot to international fame during the iconic 1976 "Judgment of Paris" tasting, where its 1971 Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon placed fifth overall and later won the 30-year rematch.
