2022 Esporão "Reserva", Alentejo, Portugal
ABOUT THE WINE
The 2022 Esporão Reserva Tinto is a blend of Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional, Syrah, Trincadeira, and Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from sustainably farmed estate vineyards surrounding Herdade do Esporão in the heart of Alentejo. The vineyards are planted on a diverse mix of granite, schist, and clay soils, providing both richness and freshness to the final blend.
Each variety is harvested separately at optimal ripeness and fermented in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts whenever possible. The wine is then aged for approximately 12 months in American and French oak barrels, followed by additional bottle aging before release. This careful élevage integrates the wine's generous fruit with layers of spice and complexity while preserving its vibrant character.
The 2022 vintage offers expressive aromas of blackberry, black cherry, plum, violets, cedar, vanilla, and sweet spice. The palate is rich and concentrated, with notes of dark berries, cocoa, tobacco, and subtle mineral nuances supported by silky tannins and balanced acidity. While approachable upon release, the wine has the structure to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, beef tenderloin, roasted pork, game meats, hearty stews, aged cheeses, and Mediterranean cuisine.
