Crafted primarily from Sangiovese with a dash of Merlot, the 2021 Poggio Badiola is sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the Chianti Classico region, particularly from the Mazzei family's estate at Castellina in Chianti. The vineyards, located at around 400 meters above sea level, benefit from cool nights and excellent sun exposure, which foster aromatic intensity and finesse.

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by maturation in small French oak barrels for about 10 months. This approach preserves freshness while adding subtle structure and complexity. The result is a wine with fragrant notes of red currant, raspberry, thyme, and hints of toast and clove. The mouthfeel is supple and energetic, with fine-grained tannins and a mineral undercurrent that makes it a versatile companion for tomato-based pastas, grilled pork, or roasted poultry.

The Mazzei family has been making wine in Tuscany for over 600 years, with a lineage dating back to Ser Lapo Mazzei, author of one of the earliest known documents referencing "Chianti" in 1398. Today, the estate is helmed by the 24th generation, who continue the legacy of innovation and respect for terroir at their iconic Castello di Fonterutoli estate in Chianti Classico.
