2022 Domaine Coche-Dury Auxey-Duresses Rouge, Burgundy, France

ABOUT THE WINE

The 2022 Coche‑Dury Auxey‑Duresses Rouge comes from Pinot Noir vines in the Auxey‑Duresses appellation of the Côte de Beaune, a village AOC known for red wines that balance fruit purity with earthy complexity. In this vintage, the wine opens with expressive aromas of spiced plum, berry compote and subtle grilled undertones, leading into a palate that combines plush fruit with refreshing acidity and refined structure. Tannins are present but polished, supporting flavors of black plum, licorice and a touch of graphite toward the finish.

Domaine Coche-Dury’s vinification is defined by a philosophy of minimal intervention and precision. Early harvesting and very strict yield management are cornerstones of the their method to ensuring freshness and vibrant acidity. Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo meticulous sorting. Fermentation occurs gently, traditionally retaining a high proportion of whole-cluster or de-stemmed fruit depending on the vintage's needs, aimed at retaining primary fruit purity. The wine is aged in oak barrels (typically barriques) where it completes malolactic fermentation. Under current winemaker Raphaël Coche, the estate has increasingly dialed back on the heavy new oak and "struck match" reduction characteristic of his father's era. The domaine remains famous for its traditional practice of bottling directly from the barrel by gravity. The red wines are very lightly fined, but generally unfiltered to preserve texture and vineyard character.

While approachable upon release, this wine will reward a few years of cellaring to fully knit its components together and reveal greater depth. Ideal pairings include roasted duck breast, herb‑crusted pork loin, mushroom risotto or aged cheeses that complement its subtle spice and mineral drive.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Domaine Coche‑Dury, based in Meursault, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France, is most famous for its cult‑status white Burgundies, praised for their precision, texture and longevity. While its red wines (Pinot Noir from sites like Auxey‑Duresses and Volnay) are produced in much smaller quantities, they nevertheless reflect the same meticulous vineyard care and terroir‑driven philosophy that define the domaine’s style: low yields, careful farming, gentle vinification and thoughtful barrel aging (typically with no more than ~25% new oak).

Though Coche‑Dury’s whites attract the highest acclaim and prices globally, their reds are treasured by Burgundy enthusiasts for their finesse, balance and nuance. The 2022 Auxey‑Duresses Rouge is an excellent ambassador for this less‑common facet of the domaine’s portfolio—structured yet gracious, and very much built to evolve gracefully in the cellar.
